Character
Some important properties of base oils include thermal stability, viscosity limits, viscosity index, volatility, oxidation, pour point, hydraulic stability, and aniline point (a measure of solubility with other materials and additives).
The main purpose
Base oils are used to manufacture products including lubricating greases, motor oil and metal processing fluids. Almost every lubricant used in plants today started off as just a base oil.
